 PACKING / TRAVEL PREPARATION LIST

   -----------------------------------------------

Currency

Cash: The official currency of Aruba is the Aruba guilder/florin(AWG). However, U.S. dollars are widely accepted in Aruba. Some merchants may not accept US $ 50 and $ 100 due to worldwide counterfeiting. Personal checks are not accepted.

Credit Cards: Nearly every major credit card is accepted in airports, hotels, and many restaurants. If you have a PIN number for your credit card, you can also receive cash advances from your credit card at ATM machines.

Traveler's checks are widely accepted and there is no charge for using them in hotels, restaurants and stores.

TAXI Info

The Aruba Department of Public Traffic has regulated the price of taxi fares. Because of this, travelers can expect to pay a set rate to particular locations. Remember that a maximum of five passengers is allowed at the set rate.

Taxi Fares

* Passengers should keep small U.S. bills or Aruban Florins on them when taking a taxi ride. The largest U.S. currency accepted is a $20 bill.

* Passengers should also keep in mind that shirtless, wet or damp passengers are not allowed. Aruba taxi companies will charge $50 for seat damage due to wet clothing or sharp objects.

* Tipping is done at the discretion of the passenger. Approximately 10 percent to 15 percent is the usual tip but is not mandatory.

* It is against the law to ride with a child under the age of five if they are not properly restrained in a child safety device. Taxis will not provide these for you, so if you are traveling with a small child, make sure you bring your car seat or booster seat from home.

* Nearly all of the drivers speak English and have also participated in the government's Tourism Awareness Program, so you can expect a smooth ride when you travel in an Aruba taxi.

Drinking Water

Aruba is home to the world's second largest desalinization plants. The water is delicious, pure & safe to drink.

Cell Phone

Your cell phone will work here, if you have an international plan, but be aware of the roaming charges. Remember to bring your charger. It is best to contact your local service provider before traveling to Aruba.

Cell phones can be rented right at the airport arrivals terminal. This is the most cost-effective option as many cell phone carries will charge you roaming fee's on data (ex. if your cell phone is constantly downloading/updating your emails, you could be charged roaming rates on all of that data, even when you are not making calls).

Service Charge

The service charge at a restaurant is shared among servers and kitchen staff. If there is a service charge, a tip is not obligatory but a token amount left for excellent service is greatly appreciated.

If there is no service charge, a tip is appropriate as in the US (+/-15%).

Sunscreen

The sun is strongest from 11am - 3pm. Be sure to re-apply sunscreen often and drink plenty of liquids. Sunglass and hats are reccommended.

Time

Aruba is on Atlantic Standard Time year-round. This is one hour later than the Northeastern United States when clocks are turned back in the fall for daylight savings time. When clocks in the Northeastern United States are moved forward, Aruba is on the same time.

Weather

The average temperature year-round is in the mid 80's fahrenheit. It's a good Idea to bring a sweater or sports jacket for breezy evenings and air conditioned restaurants.

Voltage

The voltage in Aruba is 110 -120 volts, the same as the US.
